Gann, 2nd try

We finished out our season by playing Gann last Thursday (May 12) and today. Both games were played in a brief but wonderful respite from the rain and both were incredibly tough, physical games. Scroll down for the first write up....

And then there was today. All of a sudden our field seemed to be the dangerous one when Stephanie bounced off of a Gann played in what I will argue was a blind pick. Fortunately, Stephanie is OK but it was a unnecessarily tough end of her season.
We again ended the first half tied thanks to goals from Kelly (with a picture perfect assist from Kiley), Rachel, Kiley and Danielle. Maddy made 7 awesome saves as well as a bold move by coming out of the net to recover a ground ball, and made it back into the net before the Gann player got a shot off - thanks defense! Isabel, Katelyn, Kristen, Ashley and Amanda remembered what they saw last week and shut down a lot of Gann's shots on goal. Diane, Erin, Jessica, Tori, Mackenzie, Megan and Katy all got on the field and made a big difference with their energy, clean passes and catches and smart defense.

In the second half, we saw the weirdest foul I've experienced in 7 years coaching. Maddy had the ball and was looking to clear. There was a Gann girl standing in front of her, trying to stop the pass, and she wouldn't step back. Maddy finally saw a pass and made it - only to be called for dangerous follow through. The refs asked if we had a second goalie dressed (who has a 2nd goalie dressed in a HS game??) and Katy bravely began to trot off the field, assuming she'd be going in. We ended up keeping Maddy in the goal and losing Katy for 3 minutes. But THEN, Maddy had to leave the goal and Gann got a free shot on an empty net. Unbelievable.

Katelyn and Rachel added 4 goals to our total (with an assist by Danielle) and Maddy made another 7 saves. The game ended 9 - 14, but I've never been more proud to coach these girls. We ended the season with a great dinner thanks to our lovely parents and presented team awards (see next post).

Special praise for our seniors, Danielle, Kristen, Kiley, Kelly, Katelyn and Amanda. They had great individual seasons and were wonderful leaders on and off the field. We're going to miss them a lot.

Thanks for following along this season, and come see the girls take on the coaches and alumni on Thursday, May 26 (3:30, Collins field)
